United Coins for a United Kingdom
Great Britain is set to have new coins. The Royal Mint has announced the winning designs that will appear on new British coins. These new designs will mark the biggest changes in British coinage in nearly 40 years.
If you remember, the Royal Mint held an open competition to find the new designs in August 2005 and attracted 4,000 entries. The winner was 26 years old graphic artist Matthew Dent from London. He designed a set of clever cut-aways of the Shield of the Royal Arms, its whole has been cleverly split among all six denominations from the 1p to the 50p. Completing the new range of coins is the £1 coin featuring the shield of the Royal Arms in its entirety. This is the first time that a single design has been used across a range of United Kingdom coins.
Take a look at the photo of the coins yourself, and let me know what you think? I like them much better than the ones we have now. The new designs will be available gradually throughout the year.
