Tree Man Has Op to Remove Barks
Dede Koswara, 37, from Indonesia dubbed the ‘Tree Man of Java’ because he looks like a tree, finally had two kilos of bark-like growths removed from his hands and feet. Dede’s weird tree like growth was caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and a rare immune system deficiency he suffered from, that prevents his body from fighting HPV, resulting in massive growths of bark-like warts according to US dermatology expert Dr Anthony Gaspari last year.
Dede before the operations
Good news is Dede now able to use his hands almost like the rest of us, he can eat banana, drink through a straw, hold a pen and see the outline of his toes for the first time in more than a decade. Apparently, he is also addicted to Sudoko.
After two months of treatment from a group of Indonesian doctors at Hasan Sadikin hospital, Dede said he hopes to resume a normal life, find a job and get married.
Rachmat Dinata, the skin specialist leading the Indonesian team of doctors treating Mr Koswara, said operations to remove the warts should be finished in the next three months.
He said: “There is still a high risk that there will be a recurrent growth of warts”.
“So far, though, there has been some thickening of the skin but no recurrent warts.
“Dede is very happy. Hopefully he will be able to socialise and work again.”
We wish you the best of luck Dede and speedy recovery.
