Tesco Planning to Be New iTunes
International supermarket giant Tesco has placed Apple firmly in its sight after it was revealed to be launching its own digital music download service in less than a month.
The retailer is intending to take a big bite out of Apple’s domination of music downloading with Tesco Digital. Which in May, will launch the new service, which will offer a large range of music and video options via download to media players.
Tesco Digital will initially be offering over 3 million music tracks, which will all be compatible with all the major MP3 players, including the dominating iPods.
The new Tesco Digital site is aiming to be more than just a music download portal. Downloadable music will just be Tesco’s opening shot. With UK and US, TV show’s to follow, as well as mainstream Hollywood movies, the new service will start with just 100 games but that is expected to expand rapidly.
The company has not yet revealed what the pricing structure will be for the new service. Apple’s iTunes currently offers individual tracks for $1.60. However, Tesco’s reputation is for selling all of its products at discounted rates, so presumably it will endeavour to beat Apple’s pricing structure.
Tesco already offers downloads through its Tescodownloads.com the difference being that the current site only offers tracks that are available in the Microsoft Windows WMA format.
This news comes as Tesco announced an 11.8% rise in annual profits to £2.846bn/$5.70bn.
