Redbird Reef off the coast off the charmingly named Slaughter Beach, in the US state of Delaware is the last resting place for recently retired New York City subway cars. There are already nearly 700 subway cars that have gone to meet their maker on the ocean bed near Delaware.

Jeff Tinsman, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources, control’s the states artificial reef program, he told the New York Times that “They’re basically luxury condominiums for fish.”
Apparently, subway cars on the ocean bed encourage fish to congregate together. Rather than avoiding the cars, the fish are moving to the new luxury condo facilities in such great numbers that the State is searching for even more cars as fishy accommodation.

There is even competition from other fish friendly states following the new condo unit’s success, especially as the City of New York gives them away to Delaware in return for not having to pay to have them broken up.
