Pope: Crucified frog, blasphemous

The pope is irate over a sculpture of a crucified green frog with a beer mug in one hand and an egg in the other. The sculpture is on display in the Italian city of Bolzano. The board of the Museum met early Thursday to decide whether they will side with the pope or if they will face his wrath and keep the statue up.

The 4 foot wooden sculpture is by the late German artist Martin Kippenberger.

“Surely this is not a work of art but a blashphemy and a disgusting piece of trash that upsets many people,” Pahl said by telephone as the museum board was meeting.

The Vatican letter said that the work “wounds the religious sentiments of so many people who see in the cross the symbol of God’s love”.

My personal opinion: We do have freedom of expression. Do I agree with the sculpture? Not really, but then again, I am not forced to look at it. I don’t blame the Pope for condemning it, what I would blame him for is if he tried to go further to have the statue removed. That should be left up to those in charge of the museum and not the Church of Rome!
