Nanotechnology May be the Answer to Spinal Injuries
Many of the spinal injuries that can leave people permanently paralyzed are incurable. Researchers from North-western University in the US are trying to change situation. With a new piece of nanotechnology that may enable us in the near future to completely heal spinal cords that have been cut or severed. This would then allow paralyzed people the opportunity to walk again.
The new technology is based around a gel that has been injected into mice that have severe spinal cord injuries. After only six weeks the mice were able to use their back legs again. Such improvement has not been available before.
The new gel is yet to be trailed on human patients, but the results from the animal tests are said to be extremely promising, and may allow mobility for huge numbers of sufferers.
