Kite Can Drag Cargo Ships Across the Atlantic
If you think that your Toyota costs a lot to run? Think yourself lucky that you do not own a giant cargo ship, which can cost over $10,000 a day in fuel alone. It takes an incredible amount of fuel oil for an ocean crossing by one of these floating warehouses.
With the ever-increasing fuel costs, shipbuilders are looking for alternative fuel sources in the same way that car manufacturers are turning to hybrid engines. Out at sea there are two energy sources available, wave power, and wild.
Some shipbuilders are experimenting seriously with wave power. One manufacturer believes that they have already come up with a solution that harnesses the power of the ever present Ocean winds.
This is not just a shipping company’s dream; the transatlantic cargo vessel has just completed the trip using kites to help its sale across the Ocean. The gigantic kites caught a massive 20% of the ships energy needs saving the company $2000, every day of the crossing.
They plan to install even larger kites for their next trip. This concept seems so obvious, it is a wonder that it is not been tried before.
