Israel city using DNA to fight dog poop

Petah Tikva, a suburb of Tel Aviv (that’s in Israel by the way) is using dog DNA to fight the ever growing problem of dog poop. City officials are asking pet owners to voluntarily go to their local vet and have their pets DNA sampled by using swabs in the animals mouth.

The DNA will be put in a database which will be accessed anytime unclaimed poop lies across the suburb. If they find a match than the pet owners can be looking at a fine. On the other hand if the owners do their part and cover up the poop (which means disposing of it properly) than awards such as pet food coupons and animal toys will be generously given out.

The program is on trial for six months and officials hope to use it to get the community actively involved in the safety and health of the suburb. Lets hope NYC, Chicago and others adopt this practice. It might help some. Than again maybe not.
