Insomniac Games

Insomniac Games developer of Independent console games, who brought you the mega-selling Resistance & Ratchet & Clank, have launched ‘Nocturnal’ a tech-sharing initiative, which free of charge it will share elements of its presentations and technology source code with developers around the world.
The purpose of this initiative is to develop better information sharing and communication with games developers, with a long-term goal of creating high-quality games at a lower cost.
‘Nocturnal’ is to be released in separate phases. In phase one; the Insomniac’s “R and D” site will be updated every Wednesday with new articles, research and presentations. The second phase will launch soon, and will allow for the opening up of parts of Insomniac’s source code.
The source code downloadable from a wiki, and will have constant additions to Insomniac’s source code and presentations.
The company graciously believes, that it is time to share some of the valuable information that they have learned. But also, to learn from the wider gaming community and effort to resolve common problems found when developing a game.
‘Nocturnal’ will allow for the use of elements of its third generation PS3 tools chain source code, this code is generally a highly secret element, jealously guarded by gaming companies. But this secrecy has led to the same bits of code being written over and over again, which the company says is a waste of resources, and ultimately reducing customers gaming experience.
The companies say that ‘Nocturnal’ is a very long-term project that they see as valuable for anyone who wishes to develop technology along the same lines, but with less effort involved. They believe that this program will allow game fans to get some inside info on how the game is produced, at the same time allowing fans to give the company feedback, which should in the long term, improve game quality.
Insomniac Games is the first to develop a third-generation PS3 title with Resistance 2, and the companies’ second release Ratchet & Clank Future, Tools of Destruction was considered a step forward with its CG-movie-quality graphics.
