Greener Gadgets partnered with Core77 to hold a Greener Design competition which ended on 1st February 2008. The aims of the Greener Design competition are to engage established design firms, emerging designers, and design students to come up with new and innovative solutions to address the issues of energy, carbon footprint, health and toxicity, new materials, product life cycle, and social development.

The Prizes

1st Place: US$2,500
2nd Place: US$1,000
3rd Place: US$1,000

The Greener Gadgets Conference took place on February 1st, 2008 in New York City and the winners of the Greener Design Competition were announced as follow:

1st place winner

EnerJar

The EnerJar, designed by Matt Meshulam and Zach Dwiel took top prize of the Greener Design competition. The EnerJar is an easy-to-build, DIY device that accurately measures the power draw of electrical appliances. it helps users gain an understanding of power draw, investing them in the knowlege, and leading them to reduce their electricity use.

2nd place winner

gravia lampThe Gravia Lamp, designed by Clay Moulton took second place. This was actually my favorite of the competition along with the Washup washing machine + toilet. I thought the Washup would snatch first place but it didn’t even come fourth.

3rd place winner

green cell

The 3rd place went to Theo Richardson, Charles Brill & Alex Williams for their Green Cell design. The basic idea behind this design is simple. We get all the device manufacturers to start using one standardized battery, something that i don’t think will happen anytime soon.

When the batteries are dead, you can either charge it yourself or exchanged it for a charged one, and all your gadgets would use the same battery. I hope they can turn this neat concept into reality as soon as possible.
