Omkari Panwar, a 70 year old Indian granny and wife of a retired farmer has become the world’s oldest mum after given birth to twins by caesarean section on Friday.

Mrs Panwar, who has two adult daughters, and five grandchildren but she and her husband Charan Singh Panwar, 77, wanted a male heir to the family’s smallholdings, so they had to sell their buffaloes, spent their life savings and even took out a credit card loan to finance the IVF treatment.

Omkari, who has no birth certificate and does not know the day she was born, uses the date of India’s independence in 1947 to guess her age.

She said she was nine when the British Raj left India meaning she is now 70.

The twins, born one-month premature and weighing only two pounds each are healthy and expected to survive, according to doctors at Jaswant Roy Speciality Hospital.

The previous record holder for the world’s oldest mother was Romanian Adriana Iliecscu, who gave birth to a daughter in 2005 at the age of 66.
